Durham University is a UK research-intensive university that also delivers apprenticeship and professional development opportunities for employers and employees. Through its Business and Partnerships function, the University offers degree apprenticeships that combine work-based learning with academic study, designed to give new or existing staff the skills and knowledge to excel in their roles. It currently delivers a Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship as part of its Executive Education portfolio, a part‑time, flexible programme for middle to senior managers across sectors, aligned to the Senior Leader Apprenticeship standard and tailored to business needs. Apprentices typically spend most of their time in the workplace, with around 20% dedicated to off‑the‑job training, and are required to demonstrate both workplace competence and academic achievement. Durham works with employers to meet apprenticeship standards built around agreed knowledge, skills and behaviours, enabling organisations to upskill staff, fill higher‑level skills gaps and improve performance, with levy and government funding options available. Within the University itself, a wide range of apprenticeship roles are supported, including professional services (such as business administration, finance and HR), technical (laboratory and digital/IT roles) and specialist areas (horticulture, facilities and plumbing).
