About
Pioneer Sailing Trust
Pioneer Sailing Trust is a Brightlingsea-based charitable training provider that uses traditional boatbuilding and sail training to develop skills for young people and adults. Operating from Harker’s Yard on the Shipyard Estate in Essex, the Trust runs a specialist training facility where apprentices gain practical experience in marine engineering, boatbuilding and repair, with a particular focus on the restoration of historic wooden vessels and the construction of East Coast rowing gigs. Apprentices typically work alongside experienced shipwrights in a purpose-built workshop with waterfront access, learning both traditional and modern marine industry techniques to improve their employability in the sector.
As an apprenticeship provider, Pioneer Sailing Trust delivers marine-focused apprenticeship programmes (including Heritage Engineering Technician and Marine Engineering pathways referenced in partner materials) that combine workplace training at the yard with structured off-the-job learning and opportunities to sail on the restored 70ft Essex smack Pioneer. This blend of yard-based training and time at sea is designed to build technical skills, safe working practices and broader life skills such as teamwork, communication and resilience. The Trust also collaborates with schools, training agencies, local authorities and other organisations to offer work experience and sail training voyages, providing learning opportunities for those who may benefit from additional support or alternative routes into employment in the marine and heritage sectors.
All training information above is drawn from public descriptions of the Trust’s activities on external partner sites that reference www.pioneerck18.org.
Apprenticeships Offered:
Apprenticeship standards detail what an apprentice will be doing in their day-to-day job role.
Each standard lists the skills required of apprentices, and every standard is written by a group of employers called trailblazers-experts within their industry that have worked with countless apprentices.
Listed here are the apprenticeship standards this training provider offers training for.
